Lesson:

"The Joy of Service"-- Elder Russell C. Taylor

"Elder Bruce R. McConkie has so eloquently taught us that service is essential to salvation. I have been impressed with the
urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. Progress is not created by contented people. It is up to us, you and me, to be uncomfortable in complacency, to refrain from being spectators, and to be players in the game of life.

Fathers and mothers, with your strength of example you will influence your sons and daughters for eternity with examples of loving, uncomplaining service far more convincingly by doing than only by saying. Show your children a life of love for them by a life of love and service to the Church and to our Father’s children in spiritual need.

I recall King Benjamin’s instruction to parents as they were counseled in teaching their children:

“But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another.” (Mosiah 4:15.)"

We also learn the importance of "acting now" from President Brigham Young who when he visioned the Willie Handcart Company in peril-- he ordered the Saints to serve now-- not later.

We should always strive to be in the service of our fellow beings.

Take a shopping cart back inside the store for a woman who's trying to keep her children in the car... stop and let people cross the street in crosswalks without trying to go a little faster so you don't have to stop. Be a little more kinder to all those you meet.

Service Project: It's that time of year---- FALL!! The changing of the fall leaves are gorgeous; however, to those who are unable to perform their own yard work it could mean a large obsticle and frustration on how they will manage raking all the leaves in their yards.

Find those who are in need--- widows, elderly couples, nursing homes and so forth that could really benefit from having their leaves racked. Gather garbage sacks, rakes, gloves and head out for some a fun service project!

This is also a great project for single adult wards, family home evening groups and just gathering with friends and performing this great service!

Treat: S'mores and Hot Chocolate
